Background of CLEA International, Inc.
In 1952, Central Institute for Experimental Animals (CIEA) was established to develop experimental animals for medical and pharmaceutical research. Managing the breeding, nutrition, and microbiology, CIEA succeeded in establishing a quantity breeding system of specific pathogen free (SPF) animals. In 1965, with the support from 18 major pharmaceutical companies in Japan, CIEA founded CLEA Japan, Inc. for mass breeding of SPF animals.CLEA Japan, with its position as the top-ranked animal breeder in Japan, founded CLEA International, Inc. in Menlo Park, California, USA to supply high quality SPF animals for medical and pharmaceutical researches in the United States.
